Case Study- United BIM provided BIM Services for a Data Centre Project

United BIM Data center Project

BIM Modeling & Clash Coordination for a Data Center Project in the USA

When you are working on a data center, there is no room for guesswork.Ceiling spaces are tight, systems are dense, and even a small coordination miss can turn into expensive rework on site.

For a confidential data center project in the USA, United BIM was brought in to handle BIM modeling and clash coordination for a large, mission-critical facility. The goal was simple but demanding. Identify and resolve MEP conflicts early so construction teams could move forward with confidence.

  • Project Type: Data Center / Mission-Critical Facility
  • Project Location : United States
  • Services Provided : BIM Modeling, Clash Detection, Multi-Trade Coordination
  • Client : Confidential (NDA)
  • LOD : 350
  • Tools : Autodesk Revit, Navisworks Manage, BIM 360

The Challenge

Anyone who has worked on a data center knows the reality.

The MEP systems are packed tightly into limited ceiling and service zones. HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection all compete for space, and coordination happens while designs are still evolving. Add multiple stakeholders updating models in parallel, and the risk of clashes multiplies quickly.

On this project, the biggest concerns were:

  • Heavy MEP congestion within tight service zones
  • Frequent clashes between multiple trades
  • Ongoing design changes from different teams
  • Very little tolerance for rework in a mission-critical environment

This was not a project where issues could be sorted out on site. Everything had to work before construction began.

How United BIM Approached It

Our focus was on constructability first.

We developed and coordinated multi-disciplinary BIM models to LOD 350, ensuring that every major system could be installed as intended. Using Revit for modeling and Navisworks Manage for clash detection, we carried out systematic, trade-wise coordination to identify conflicts early and resolve them logically.

Rather than just flagging clashes, we worked through MEP routing rationalization, maintaining required clearances, access for maintenance, and overall serviceability. Coordination was handled through structured review cycles, allowing teams to assess, approve, and move forward without confusion.

To manage frequent updates and stakeholder inputs, we used BIM 360 to maintain version control and keep everyone aligned. This ensured that the models being coordinated were always current, accurate, and ready for downstream use.

What We Delivered

By the end of the coordination phase, the project team had:

  • A clash-free federated BIM model ready for site execution
  • Coordinated MEP layouts validated for installation feasibility
  • Clear, trade-wise clash reports with actionable resolutions
  • Reliable coordination outputs that site teams could trust

The emphasis was always on build-ready information, not just clean models.

The Impact

With clashes resolved before construction, the risk of field rework was significantly reduced. Installation teams could plan their work with greater certainty, and the transition from coordination to construction was far smoother than it typically is on high-density data center projects.

Most importantly, the project moved forward with confidence, something that matters a lot when you are delivering a mission-critical facility.

Why This Matters for Data Center Projects

Data centers demand precision.
BIM coordination at the right level of detail is not a nice-to-have. It is what prevents delays, rework, and costly site conflicts.

This project is a clear example of how early, disciplined BIM coordination supports smoother execution in complex, high-risk environments.
