How Structural BIM Modeling Improved Clarity for a 1,000,000+ SQFT Airport Parking Garage in Florida
A structural BIM case study showing how United-BIM modeled a large airport parking garage in Florida to improve structural clarity, ramp coordination, level alignment, and design review.
Project Requirement
The client needed a structural BIM model that could bring a large parking garage into a clearer, more controlled digital environment.
The project was not about creating a visual model only. The requirement was to model the structure in a way that helped the design team review how the garage actually worked across multiple levels.
- Create a Revit-based structural model from available drawings and project documentation
- Model parking decks, ramps, columns, beams, walls, cores, and major structural components
- Capture level-to-level relationships across a large multi-story garage
- Represent curved façade edges and repeated structural bays accurately
- Improve review of ramp transitions, vehicular circulation, and core alignment
- Support better documentation and downstream coordination through a clean BIM model
The Big Problem
Large parking structures are repetitive, but they are not simple.
The biggest challenge was not the number of floors. It was the relationship between levels, ramps, cores, vehicular movement, pedestrian bridges, and structural continuity.
In 2D drawings, these relationships were split across plans, sections, elevations, and details. That made it harder to review the garage as one connected structural system.
The project team needed a model that could reduce drawing interpretation gaps and make the structure easier to understand at both the overall and level-specific scale.
Built a Structured Revit Model from Project Documentation
United-BIM developed a structural BIM model using the available architectural and structural drawings, sections, elevations, and project references.
The model included:
- Parking decks
- Structural slabs
- Beams and columns
- Shear walls and core walls
- Ramp geometry
- Vehicular bridge areas
- Pedestrian bridge interfaces
- Elevator and stair cores
- Major structural openings
- Curved edge conditions
Modeled the Garage Around Level Logic
Parking garage coordination depends heavily on level control.
Our team organized the model around floor levels, ramp transitions, deck slopes, and vertical circulation. This helped make the relationship between each level easier to review and reduced ambiguity around how ramps and decks connected.
Captured Ramp and Circulation Geometry
Ramp geometry was one of the most important parts of the model.
United-BIM modeled the ramp conditions to help the project team review:
- Vehicular movement between levels
- Ramp-to-deck transitions
- Edge alignment
- Slope continuity
- Structural support locations
- Clearance-sensitive areas
Organized Vertical Cores and Pedestrian Connections
The garage included multiple vertical cores and pedestrian connection points. These elements needed to remain aligned with the structural layout and circulation intent.
The model helped review core locations, stair/elevator zones, bridge interfaces, and vertical alignment across the garage.
- Vehicular movement between levels
- Ramp-to-deck transitions
- Edge alignment
- Slope continuity
- Structural support locations
- Clearance-sensitive areas
Key Modeling Focus Areas
Modeled repeated deck plates with consistent level control, slab edges, openings, and structural framing references.
Developed ramp geometry to support review of vehicular circulation, deck connectivity, and slope continuity.
Organized columns, beams, walls, and support elements to create a readable structural framework.
Modeled vertical cores to support review of circulation, access, and level-to-level alignment.
Captured bridge connection zones to help the team understand how pedestrian movement connected into the parking structure.
Modeled curved edge conditions to reflect the architectural character while maintaining structural clarity.
Project Impact
The structural BIM model helped the client review a complex parking garage with more control and less drawing dependency.
The impact was visible in three areas:
01
The model converted plans, sections, and elevations into one connected structural environment. This helped the team understand the garage layout faster and review the project at a larger scale.
02
Ramp transitions, deck levels, and circulation paths became easier to evaluate in 3D. This reduced uncertainty around how vehicles moved through the structure and how levels connected.
03
Vertical cores and pedestrian bridge connections were easier to review because their relationship with the main structure was visible in the model, not separated across multiple drawings.
Key Deliverables
The completed model provided the project team with a more reliable way to review the garage structure.
